Oh by the way, if you like beer and are interested in reading a blog about how to brew it, check out this new blog by a friend of mine.
For me things are winding down finally and my goal is to focus on making art and little else. I'm also doing a collaboration, but I can't really talk about it. Because it's experimental it's possible it may never see the light of day, and this may be the last time I ever mention it... so just pretend you never saw this... yeah.
So, sometimes I get song-obsessive, and here's my latest. Song is Carry Me Ohio, by Sun Kil Moon. Reminds me of something bitter sweet that didn't work out.
Well, interesting week. It started off with a meeting at Urban Spirit Coffee House to discuss the Columbus International Film+ Video Festival. I'm one of the judges this year for the 'The Arts' category. I'll say more about this when the actual festival happens later this year (August). But yeah! Should be fun!
I got to test out the film as you can see on the left (that's my nephew, who is in fact, awesome). Definitely glitchy, but fun to work with. I kept having a problem with spots appearing on the film which I removed with photoshop. I can see some applications for this, next time I go to one of my events I'll bring some along.
... and the rest is just details.
So anyway, here's a fun bit I stumbled upon. Check out LaLa Ladyfag & her impeccable fashion sense!
(on the right, just a sketch...) Yesterday was the Vernal Equinox here in the northern hemisphere. I hope your Ostara/1st Day of Spring was most festive (and if you're in the southern hemisphere that your Mabon/1st Day of Fall was groovy as well). I didn't do too much, just went out to Newark Ohio to meet up with people I don't get to see much, and meet some new folks. Goodtimes.
So anyway, here's something interesting. I found via Nerdcore a link to the film Beautiful Losers About the film: BEAUTIFUL LOSERS celebrates the spirit behind one of the most influential cultural moments of a generation
In the early 1990's a loose-knit group of likeminded outsiders found common ground at a little NYC storefront gallery. Rooted in the DIY (do-it-yourself) subcultures of skateboarding, surf, punk, hip hop & graffiti, they made art that reflected the lifestyles they led. Developing their craft with almost no influence from the "establishment" art world, this group, and the subcultures they sprang from, have now become a movement that has been transforming pop culture.
Starring a selection of artists who are considered leaders within this culture, Beautiful Losers focuses on the telling of personal stories. It speaks to themes of what happens when the outside becomes "in" as it explores the creative ethos connecting these artists and today's youth.
I really liked it. The trailer is below, and if you want you can watch the complete film (broken down into several parts via Youtube) you can do that here.
For music... well we have to have something a little seasonal, so here's Green Man by XTC
Yeah, nothing terrible, just a bug that set me down for a few days.
So, since I've been stuck here, I've been reading (or in this case, re-reading) books, getting caught up on articles I've been meaning to check out, and looking up stuff online.
And as always, I pass the caramel goodness on to you!
First off, if you have time for a short story...
I found this through Double Edge Films, which I found after watching the movie Ink which I found randomly because I was looking for something to watch. Ink is an independent film released late in 2009. Really good story, especially when most movies these days are either rips off of franchises or just reconstituting another movie in a new format. Ink is on Netflix and iTunes & if you don't mind commercials, you can watch Ink for free on Hulu.
& for the locals, the downtown Wonderbread factory that was closed down is about to be converted into office, art studio, performance, and retail space called Wonderland. More info at the Columbus Underground. There's a meeting January 29th at Junctionview Studios. I hope this takes off, this will be very interesting indeed!
